Animal Description
Name: Greater Short-Horned Lizard or Horned Toad Scientific Name: Phrynosoma Hernandesi Physical Description: The Greater Short-Horned Lizard is a small creature, about 50-70mm in length (Recovery Strategy for the Greater Short - Horned Lizard, 2014). These creatures are reasonably flat, with wide bodies and short legs and multiple short horns on the back of its head, neck and back (Recovery Strategy for the Greater Short - Horned Lizard, 2014). Additionally, the Greater Short- Horned Lizard is either yellowish, gray or reddish- brown, depending on their environment (Recovery Strategy for the Greater Short - Horned Lizard, 2014). Habitat: The Greater Short-Horned Lizard live in short grass prairies that are near loose dirt, soil, sand and rocks (Short- Horned Lizard, 2014). Their preferred environment temperature is from between 60-80 degrees Fahrenheit (Short- Horned Lizard, 2014). Theses creatures are located in the Southern parts of Alberta and Saskatchewan (Short- Horned Lizard, 2014). Reproduction: These creature are able to reproduce by giving birth to live lizards (Short- Horned Lizard, 2014). The Greater Short - Horned Lizard do not hatch eggs, to reproduce, the eggs are retained within the female until the live lizards are born (Short - Horned Lizard, 2014). The mating period for most of these creatures are between May and June (Short- Horned Lizard, 2014). Food Source: The Greater Short -Horned Lizard is a carnivore, meaning they eat meat (Short- Horned Lizard, 2014). These creatures feed mainly on ants, however, they also eat beetles, grasshoppers and spiders (Short- Horned Lizard, 2014). |
